- Archaeology in the Marquesas Islands of the
South Pacific, Summer 2010
Rediscover an ancient Polynesian chiefdom! The Andover Foundation
for Archaeological Research presents this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to live and work in one of the world’s most beautiful
and secluded outposts. Now in its seventh year, the project charts
the efflorescence of the unique Marquesan culture with a focus on
Tahuata, one of the most traditional islands of the group. Beneath
the waving fronds of coconut plantations and forests of breadfruit
and mango, project participants will investigate the remarkably
intact remains of residential and ceremonial architecture used by
the Marquesans centuries ago.
This year’s project will take place from June 26 to July 25, 2010.
In addition to conducting analysis and cataloguing of the artifacts
they find, participants will research the local history and cultural
significance of objects in a small community museum on Tahuata.
For further details, travel information and expenses please visit
the official AFAR website at
www.afargo.org, or
email project leader and professor of archaeology Dr. Barry Rolett,

inquiries welcome! No prior archaeological experience necessary.
